Three judges from the Santa Clara County Branch, in a blind reading, unanimously chose three winners and two honorable mentions for the 2023-24 Limerick Contest, which took place in March. The branch received 36 entries from 12 Pen Women.
The winners are:
- First place ($90): Sharon Dorsey, Chesapeake Branch, “Oops”
- Second place ($50): Carol White, Boca Raton Branch, “The Chef”
- Third place ($30): Sharon Dorsey, Chesapeake Branch, “Wedding Night Lament”
- Honorable mentions: Carol White, Boca Raton Branch, “The Hunt”; Karen Morris, Pensacola Branch, “A Precocious Young Artist”
The branch hopes to do this again next year, so put on your Leprechaun ears and be composing.
Oops
There once was a cricket named Don
who liked to hide out in the john.
One day he forgot
to lock down his spot.
One flush and now Donny’s long gone.
— Sharon Dorsey
The Chef
There once was a chef with a cleaver
who hacked up his wife with a fever
Awaiting a trial
he said with a smile
T’was the easiest way I could leave’er.
— Carol White
Wedding Night Lament
There once was a young man named Fred
who next day was going to wed.
He clock didn’t chime,
to get there in time,
so now he’s alone in his bed.
—Sharon Dorsey
The Hunt
Two hunters went on a safari
where roads were muddy and tarry.
They fell in a ditch
said karma’s a bitch
’cause those lions sure don’t look sorry.
— Carol White
A Precocious Young Artist
A precocious young artist named Vinnie
sculpted the man on the penny.
She became quite endeared
to the sad face and beard
of this great man of “fourscore and twenty”
—Karen Morris
